Eight unique features of E-commerce technology
The distinguishing capabilities of e-commerce technology.
5-mark Exam Answer
E-commerce technologies have eight unique features that distinguish them from traditional commerce. According to Laudon and Traver, these features both challenge traditional business thinking and explain why e-commerce has generated so much interest.
- 1.Ubiquity and Global Reach
- 2.Universal Standards and Richness
- 3.Interactivity and Information Density
- 4.Personalization/Customization
- 5.Social Technology
Ubiquity means e-commerce is available just about everywhere, at all times. It liberates the market from a physical space, creating a marketspace and reducing transaction costs for consumers. Global reach means technology crosses cultural, regional, and national boundaries far more conveniently than traditional commerce; the potential market size is roughly the world's online population.
Universal standards — the Internet's technical standards shared by all nations — lower market entry costs for merchants and search costs for consumers. Richness refers to the complexity and content of a message; e-commerce integrates video, audio, and text into a single experience. Interactivity allows two-way communication between merchant and consumer, similar to a face-to-face experience.
Information density is the total amount and quality of information available to all market participants; e-commerce makes information plentiful, cheap, and accurate, reducing information asymmetries. Personalization lets merchants target marketing messages to specific individuals, while customization changes the delivered product or service based on user preferences or prior behavior.
Social technology is the eighth feature: e-commerce technologies have evolved to be more social by allowing users to create and share content with a worldwide community. Unlike the broadcast (one-to-many) model of older mass media, e-commerce provides a unique many-to-many model of mass communication.
Amazon demonstrates richness, interactivity, and personalization through rich product pages, customer reviews, and recommendations based on past purchases; Facebook illustrates social technology through user-generated content shared globally.
Together, these eight features make e-commerce technology fundamentally different from traditional commerce, enabling interactive, personalized, and globally reachable transactions that were not previously possible.
The exam interface follows the university paper pattern: Section A & B carry 5-mark questions; Section C carries objective questions.
