Malicious code includes viruses, worms, Trojan horses, ransomware, and bots.
Malicious code (malware) has five main types. A virus replicates file to file and delivers a payload. A worm spreads from computer to computer without user action. A Trojan horse appears benign but does something unexpected. Ransomware locks files or computers and demands payment. Bots are covertly installed programs that respond to attacker commands, often grouped into botnets of zombie computers.
