Types of insider threats
Insider attacks include malicious insiders (embezzlement, data theft) and negligent insiders (accidental exposure).
Insider threats come from trusted employees. Malicious insiders have criminal intent, such as embezzlement or data theft. Negligent insiders inadvertently expose data through weak passwords, file sharing, or phishing clicks. Compromised insiders have their credentials stolen by external attackers. Insiders cause more damage on average than external attacks because they have legitimate access to systems.
